Whole Body Winter Wellness
This season can be delightful: waking up to a world covered in snow, snuggling up with hot chocolate and a good book, gathering with friends and family. But when it takes a toll in the form of colds, dry skin, and chapped lips, the co-op is here for you. At Lakewinds, you’ll find winter wellness for your whole body, with body care items that are free from parabens, phthalates, triclosan, and dozens more ingredients. So you get the nurturing support your body needs inside and out — and peace of mind, too.
“When our customers shop for skin care, they know our products are clean and free of any synthetic ingredients, like fragrance, parabens, phthalates — and never tested on animals,” says Abby Ayers, wellness category manager. “There is a plethora of worrisome ingredients out there, and we pride ourselves on having more strict ingredient standards than most stores. We do the work so our customers don’t have to, including in wellness and body care.”
More moisture needed
Crisp winter days can leave your skin feeling extra dry. There are two perennial favorites when it comes to deep hydration.
- Weleda Skin Food has been around for almost 100 years. Their full-body moisturizer works great on dry hands and heels, elbows and knees, or even as a highlighter for cheekbones.
- BeeSpa is a locally made, ultra-moisturizing hand and food cream that’s a staff favorite.
- If you’re looking to try something new, All Good body serum is a certified organic blend that absorbs quickly to nourish and hydrate skin. Partly made from regeneratively grown sunflower oil, it’s both sustainable and effective.
Happy smiles despite the chill
Whether you’re snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, or just enjoying a winter walk, cold air can sap moisture. Keep your lips hydrated with moisturizing lip balms made from clean ingredients.
- “One of our top sellers is the Evan Healy Whipped Shea Butter lip balm,” says Tony Landkammer, wellness department manager at the Chanhassen store. “Shea Butter acts as a sealant to help repair dry, cracked lips and locks in the beneficial moisture from the other oils in the balm, such as argan, olive, and almond oil. It’s a soothing way to tell your lips that winter won’t be so bad.”
- Another favorite is Weleda lip butter. Hydrating and glossy, it acts more like a clear lip gloss with a little sheen.
Smooth, glowing faces
Your face can take a hit on dry days. Deep creams can really penetrate into dry skin, while hyaluronic acid can help add elasticity to skin, making it smoother.
- Hyalogic Pure HA serum is new to the co-op, designed to hydrate, soothe, and refresh, while helping to lessen the appearance of fine lines.
- Acure’s Ultra Hydrating overnight cream is a lovely, fluffy moisturizer that soaks in overnight. A little bit goes a long way, so the jar lasts and lasts. As a bonus, Acure is Climate Neutral Certified.
Hair care to battle dry winter air
When indoor heating and cold weather dry out your hair, hair oil can protect strands, help prevent breakage, and give you more volume and texture.
The wellness team has two favorites this season:
- Zatik hair serum is made for fine, delicate hair. It has essential fatty acids, oils, and plant extracts to smooth and hydrate hair and soothe your scalp.
- Pranarom Strong Roots follicle and scalp support is an essential oil blend with seed oils, rosemary, and lavender that relieves the scalp and encourages hair to grow.
Back to the (supplement) basics
There are numerous supplements and blends that support immunity for your winter wellness, but don’t forget about the essentials! Vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc are key for the winter months, when we have fewer daylight hours and are fending off the latest round of germs.
“There are lots of trendy products, but those are the tried-and-true top three,” says Jeremy White, wellness department manager at our Richfield store. “They cover a lot of bases for immune support.”
Soothing sips
When you cradle a warm drink in your hands and breathe in the aroma and steam, it can help soothe a cold or a cough. And with added ingredients to help you feel better and fight the germs, it’s even better! The co-op offers wonderful options. One is Umcka ColdCare, a lemon-flavored hot drink mix that has been found to help ease cold symptoms and help you recover more quickly. (As with all remedies, please read the fine print before using.)
Warm snuggles for cold days
Warmies are stuffed animals with a comforting bonus. With a weighted interior that’s infused with lavender, Warmies are easy to heat in the microwave, bringing extra warmth during the cold winter months. The Warmies animals are great for kids of all ages, and the cuddly slippers and neck wraps are wonderful, too.
