National Co-op Month: 5 Interesting Facts to Celebrate
October is National Co-op Month and we think this is cause to celebrate—if we do say so ourselves. Here are 5 interesting things about co-ops that prove how are special this business is:
- All co-ops are founded on the 7 co-op principles. These principles guide the decision-making and foundation of all co-ops, new or old. We encourage you to learn more about these principles — we think you’ll find them interesting!
- Co-ops are not just about food. There are electric co-ops, housing co-ops, worker co-ops, artist co-ops and many more. They are found all over the world, building stronger, more resilient communities. All of them are owned by their members and are there to serve their members.
- Co-ops are by the people and for the people. When you become a member of a co-op, you add your voice to the chorus of leadership that guides and builds the organization. You vote for the board of directors, which steers the co-op’s direction. You’re an integral part of the democratic process that founds the organization.
- Co-ops are leaders in education. Co-ops are built on action and knowledge. They engage people in their communities and encourage members to take an active role. Here at Lakewinds, we provide in-store events, demonstrations and tours. Our newsletter is filled with recipes, facts and tips. Around our region we support great organizations that are educating communities on food, farming, land stewardship, healthy eating, and much more.
- Co-ops give back: Speaking of support — have you heard about the Lakewinds Organic Field Fund (LOFF)? LOFF is a grant program designed to provide funding for farmers who are working on the development and sustainability of organics through research and development, organic certification, transitioning farms from conventional to organic, creating new farms and land trusts for organic farms. Throughout October, you can round up your grocery order and apply those extra cents to the LOFF program. Read about our 11 recipients who received a LOFF grant in 2015 and learn more about how Lakewinds Co-op is giving back.
